Simon is currently serving in the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth, based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint. For the past 15 years he has performed in some of the most prestigious concert venues around the world as both a soloist and an ensemble player.
In 2011 he was fortunate enough to have seen operational service in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in his secondary role as a combat medic. He also commanded a Type 2 Mastiff armoured vehicle on combat logistic patrols across much of the operational theatre, awarding him the Afghanistan Campaign Medal in November 2011.
After returning to the UK, he studied for a diploma in instrumental performance on the tuba whilst conducting Roche Brass Band, a first-grade brass band from Cornwall. During the course of the next six years, he held Musical Director posts at a number of Championship Section brass bands throughout Cornwall, achieving good results in competitions and public performances. After completing a BMus (Hons) degree with Portsmouth University, Simon decided to further his conducting experience by becoming the first non-commissioned officer in RMBS history to study for a master’s degree in conducting. Having recently graduated with distinction from this intensive course, he is looking forward to using his skills with Phoenix Chorale.
