Simon became Musical Director of Phoenix Chorale in September 2019. He is also currently serving in the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth, based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint. For the past 15 years he has performed in some of the most prestigious concert venues around the world as both a soloist and an ensemble player.
During his RM career, Simon is fortunate enough to have seen operational service in Helmand Province, Afghanistan in 2011 in his secondary role as a combat medic. He also commanded a Type 2 Mastiff armoured vehicle on combat logistic patrols across much of the operational theatre for which he was awarded the Afghanistan Campaign Medal.
After returning to the UK, he studied for a diploma in instrumental performance on the tuba whilst conducting Roche Brass Band, a first-grade brass band from Cornwall. During the course of the next six years, he held Musical Director posts at a number of Championship Section brass bands throughout Cornwall, achieving good results in competitions and public performances. After graduating from Portsmouth University with a BMus (Hons) degree, Simon decided to further his conducting experience and became the first non-commissioned officer in RM Band Service history to achieve a master’s degree in conducting.
