James Parkinson

Musical Director

BMus (Hons)  LRSM   AMusTCL

James became Musical Director of Phoenix Chorale in June 2021. He is also currently serving in the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines Plymouth, based at HMS Raleigh in Torpoint. For the past 27 years, he has performed in some of the most prestigious concert venues around the world, both as a soloist and as a conductor.

James' journey into music started at school, where he joined the choir and eventually became head chorister. His singing developed to county standard and he went on to sing in the Kent Youth Singers.

Having played violin, flute and clarinet from a young age, James joined the Royal Marines Band Service in September 1994. He has since travelled extensively, playing music to royalty and audiences across the world. He has performed as a soloist and conductor with the bands and has even arranged music that has been played in the Royal Albert Hall.

Due to sustaining a number of injuries over the years, James qualified as a Body Control Pilates teacher in 2017 and specialises in teaching Pilates to musicians with the aim of promoting musculoskeletal injury prevention.

James is already enjoying rehearsing with the choir and is looking forward to many opportunities to perform with them over the coming years.
